I'm back :)

Hello!

Well I made it back in one piece! I had a good time and thought I would share my trip report :)

Day One - left early in the AM for Miami. Uneventful drive down there except for some wanna be race car drivers near Daytona. Here is a lovely picture of Daytona Shores at sunset.

Once we got to Miami we spent 3 hours looking for a room without success. So we took a nap until 6am and headed over to the pier (note - this is the first dumb thing we did on the trip, we were so tired!).

Day Two- We didn't have any issues getting our stuff on board. Here are some pictures of the ship:

And here are some pictures of Miami as we left port.

Don't you love the people on shore sending us off?

HERE WE GO!
AND WE ARE GONE!

Our first meal on the boat. I know it seems silly to take a food pic, but the buffet food was really good on this trip.

I did some power shopping for booze before dinner. I got 2 liters of Absolute ($10 each), 4 liters of rum ($7 each) & 2 liters of cream rum ($13 each). If this booze is anything like the last batch I bought, it will be sitting in my liquor cabin for a good 2 years before it's opened lol.

I also won $20 in nickels with my very first bet in the casino :) I cashed out and left lol

We had filets for dinner that night. Not as good as it sounds, I think mine was steamed not grilled, it had the consistency of pot roast. But it was still better than what I would of had at home :)

Day Three - Woke up early to graze at the breakfast buffet on the Lido deck. I ate something I was allergic and I was very sick for 6 hours. Here are some of my spots:

I also blew 50% of one eye and 75% of the other eye's blood vessels while being ill. It was like throw me off the boat and let me get over it ill. I'll never look at breakfast the same way again!

Anyway, my mom managed to get me from our cabin to the top of the boat. They covered me up in beach towels and let me die in peace until about 4. I guess at that point it was out of my system because the spots appeared and I was ok enough to eat not one but two lobster tails at dinner that night. I am sure I scared my table mates with my spots and eyes (should of took an eye pic, that would of been cool lol) Two Benedryll pills later and I was out like a light and half the spots were gone by morning :)

Day Four - Grand Cayman is beautiful place! We weren't able to stop at our normal port and had to swing to the opposite side of the island. We tendered in Spot's Bay right next to the Inspiration! That was my first cruise ship and I didn't have any pictures of her so I was happy to get some great shots while going to the island. She was a sister ship of the Imagination; they were identical in every way. They joked with us and told us to make sure we were on the right ship when we came back. Even the decor is the same!

The water in Grand Cayman is normally crystal clear and smooth like this:

This was the water on the Georgetown side:

Wow! Can you see all the sand in the waves? The riptide was huge, I am an excellent swimmer but could only stay in it for 10 minutes. Those waves don't look as bad as some in Daytona but they were so strong. They were knocking people down left and right. I know this is so wrong of me but I spent a good 20 minutes laughing at my mother as she tried to get up after being knocked over. She had sand embedded into every crevice and wore a stunned expression for a good 5 minutes while she sort of sat there. She says I'm evil lol

The sand was the perfect tan color too with the consistency of powdered sugar. It was fantastic, when I go back in April I am going to get a Ziplock of some so I can paint my office that color :)

This is one of my fav pics from the trip, it was right above where we were laying out in the sun:

Back to the boat, dinner was gross, we got a weird shrimpy thing. It was so bad I took a pic to warn others! eeeww

But the duck was so sooooooooo good, be sure to try it if you are on a Carnival boat :)

We had the nicest table mates, they were Gerry, Cheryl and Catherine from Kansas City. They worked in the Instructional Design group for Sprint. How weird is that? I work in the Instructional Design group for Citi! Here is Cheryl doing the chicken dance. For the low low price of $20 I'll take it off my blog Cheryl and never mention it again. I take paypal ;)

After that stellar performance I was inspired to try the casino again. Three 7's means $25 :) I cashed out and left again lol

Day Five - Jamaica - Am I glad I went? Sure, I can say that I've been there. Won't do it again though. My idea of a vacation is nice clean things and not being bothered. You don't get that in Jamaica! We started the day at 7:30 AM. We walked to the other dock where all the touristy stuff was. There was a sad little beach there that we walked on for 5 minutes then decided to leave. We took a boat ride (add that to our dumb list) to Mahagony beach from this guy who had nothing else better to do. We were the only ones there for a long time. We picked up teeny tiny shells which was fun but got bored pretty quickly. We decided to start walking towards the boat and ended up in downtown. Ok that was dumb too lol. A cabbie stopped and made us get into his car and he took us to the Tahjma Hall (sp??) shopping center. We messed around there for a bit and wandered back towards the tourist area. Low and behold we found the place we were trying to find all along, Margaritaville. It is tourist city, booze, pool and beach! But truthfully by then we were so pooped we got on the boat early. That was the most enjoyable part of the day. We camped out at the childen's pool which faced the island. The wind was blowing, the sun was bright and no one was on the ship. I now know why people stay on the boat during port days!

The mountains near our port..look at those houses!

The resort area that we had such a hard time trying to find:
Close up of Jamaica water:
Our wake while leaving..I can see why people try to get the aft balcony cabins, it's mesmerizing:

Oh and I forgot to mention lunch, it was all Jamaican food. Lots of spicy chicken and fish, good stuff. We skipped the formal meal because it didn't sound good but ate the late night mexican buffet. Note to other travellers, the steak taco thingy on the bar was GOOD! I don't eat sweets, but the dessert area was pretty and picture worthy:

Day Six - Our fun day at Sea..and it was fun. The sun was bright but the wind kept us cool. Spent the day vegging at the pool with 2000 other people (no joke, there were 2400 passengers and 900 crew members on that boat..every sunny spot was covered with a chair!). I lost all the money I won in the casino except for 3 dollars...that is good for me :)

Day Seven/Eight/Nine/Ten - We got off the boat at 10-ish and headed to Daytona. We stayed there 3 nights and left Sunday morning. Thursday was a little cool but it warmed up slowly. Saturday was really nice for swimming, the pools were very clean and heated at where we stayed. I should of taken a picture but I was all pictured out by then. I am nice and tan! :)

Crazy Daytona birds! Don't they know the water is cold?

So I'm back! I'll be on the Legend on April 29th. My next cruise will be Dec 6, 2008 for 8 days. Little Miss Natalie will be on that trip with me :)

Bring on the HEAT

I leave a week from tomorrow to drive to Miami to hop on a boat. It was a last minute reservation, I got an email saying I could do a 5 day cruise for $279 a person. $279? heck sign me up and my mom too!

We are leaving out of Miami on the Imagination. It is an older ship, similar to the Inspiration that I was on 2 years ago. Friday is driving, Saturday we get on the boat at noonish, Sunday we are at sea, Monday we are in Jamaica, Tuesday we are in Grand Cayman and Wenesday we are back at sea. They'll kick us off the boat Thursday morning at the crack of dawn. We plan to drive back slowly and stop at a beach or two on the way back since we don't have to be back to work until Monday.

Should I be planning more trips? Probably not. But it helps pass the time and I think I suffer from that "it's cold and yucko" winter syndrom. I need warmth, the sun and the ocean!

Think about this for a minute...at work I often set things to expire 90 days from when they were submitted. Today it was 5-8-07...whoa..that is just a month off from when I think I'll get my referral! Just 4 months to go until I see her picture...6 until I get to pick her up. She's been born, I hope someone is feeding her well and loving on her. If I knew where she was I'd take 3 months unpaid FMLA to take care of her myself!

But since I can't do that I'll just stay awake at night worrying about her and planning out things to do to pass the time. My bank account is taking a hit but after our low bonus this year so I wasn't going to meet my goals anyway. Savings smavings get me on a boat!

How exciting! Matched through Oct 13th. If they keep this up my referral will be in June.

So now I just have to distract myself with enough stuff so time will go faster.

Congrats to all the families that got their referral today!

I'm so hungry! lol

The cruise is 89 days away and I am dieting so my summer clothes will look better. Then I decided I wanted all NEW summer clothes so I went out and bought several items in a smaller size (don't worry, I kept the receipts!).

My cruise goal is 46 pounds. That should get me out of this size, past the next one and into my new clothes comfortably. As of 7:30 tonight I was 17 pounds into my goal. I think I'm going to make a ticker!

I'd like to loose even more for China. I have a friend who lost close to 100 pounds on weight watchers! How crazy is that? She doesn't even look like the same person.

So anyway, the first thing people ask is how I lost so much weight so fast. I swear 10 pounds of that is water. I stopped eating salt (chips) and increased my water to 10-14 cups a day and it just fell off in less than a week. It was crazy fast.

The other 7 I have starved off. I'm just kidding. Really I'm only eating enough so I don't feel hungry. And hungry now means I feel my stomach growls before I eat. I pretty much eat whatever I want but I make sure to eat 1 bag of frozen stir fry veggies a day (that's a pound!). I try to eat it for dinner so it will last the whole night. Right now I am on a spicy kick, I cook 1 bag of veggies and 3 ounces of chicken breast in just a little bit of water (steam it really). Then I add tabasco, garlic and 5 chinese spice. Yum yum!

You know what is interesting? I feel a lot better when I eat when I want instead of with a group. I come to work later than everyone else. I'll eat breakfast at 9:30-ish then turn around to eat with a group of people at noon. I can't tell you how many times I've eaten lunch when I wasn't a bit hungry. Now I wait until I'm hungry, I eat my normal breakfast (and this is bad, its a biscuit and coffee, 550 calories, pure fat) and I eat a light lunch which is 1/3 of the size of my old lunch. But now instead of noon, I eat anywhere from 2-4. Then I'm ready for veggie dinner at around 7. Works beautifully!

I know lots of people read my blog (I have a magic page counter!) do any of you have good diet recipies? Is anyone else trying to diet for China? What plan are you on? Talk to me! :) - Kim

1 down, 1 to go!

Half the fun of a cruise is shopping for fru fru clothes. I am not a fru fru kind of girl normally but on special occasions I can duke it out with the best of them.

My 7 day cruise has not one but TWO formal nights. I get to buy 2 fru fru dresses! Woohooo!

Here is the first one, purchased from ebay in navy in like 18 sizes bigger haha

It has a wrap with it that I'm going to attach somehow. Nothing is more irritating than your fru fru accessory slipping on you all night long. Maybe I can get a wrap from one of the stops that will go with it? That would be really cool :)

For my second outfit I plan to buy a fuzzy sweater, like angora in a light color like white, light blue or pink. Then I'll con my mother into making a black ball skirt (who knew those were so hard to find in a matte satin?). I have a silver one that is sort of shiney but it breaks all the big girl rules. Nothing shiney near your butt! That includes cheap velvet that turns shiney when you sit on it. Just say no to polyester velvet!

I've not updated in awhile so here I go:
-The deck has most of it's posts up. Tomorrow is suppose to be 56 and sunny so we are putting up the rail part. We are slow but steady, it will eventaully be done.

-Work is ok, raises and bonuses really sucked this year. Considering all the after hours I had to do it REALLY sucks. Like I might go get a part time job it sucked so bad. We'll see I guess.

-I've decided not to plan for any other kids until I have this one home. I had grand plans for El Salvador and Poland but adding more kids is expensive. So I decided I will wait until Natalie is 3-4 to see how we are doing before I start paperwork. Who knows, by then China could of opened up again for singles. Or I could be married and requalify (hehehe I barely got that typed out before I started to giggle..the earth is still warm, nothing has frozen over, kim will stay single).

-I have been a good girl and have really stuck to my budget. I won't hit my savings goal for March because of my bonus so I had to adjust all that (and I hate adjusting $ goals). But I'll be close and hopefull after I head to China I'll have the emergency fund I want all set up and I'll be a little less strict on me in 2008.

-And last but not least, no new news on the baby front. Some hope for May, some hope for June but I think it will be July. Either way, it will work out just fine :)

Have a good weekend!

Sorta... kinda... good enough?

I can't find anyone willing to shell out 2K for the massive long super cool Mediterranean cruise this Sept. So instead we are heading to the western Caribbean for 7 days!

I was able to upgrade our cabin from the very bottom to almost the top. Some say that is better, some say worse. I really don't think my "past cruiser discount" was that great. I was expecting the price to be discounted not for our room to be moved. Hopefully closer to the cruise they'll sell out of cheapo cabins and bump us to something nicer. Stranger things have happened :)

My boat:

My room:

This little cabin is much nicer than the first cabin I was in on the Inspiration. On the last trip we only showered and slept in the room so we didn't pay for a window on this trip. We are going to spend that money on shore instead snorkeling :)

YAY!

Mirth on Monday :)

Visit Terri's site!
Ok, remember last Monday when I was sooo excited about the clothes? They are here! I can't believe Bonnie gave me a huge bag full of baby outfits, I love them! There are so many that I'll be taking to China with me because they are so soft and squishy (Carters!). There are so many, I took pictures of all but poor blogger would take days to upload them all so here are a few:

And here is my favorite! It's it cute?

Aren't they great? Happy Monday!

I also have fantastic news on the adoption front that I am going to wait until Thursday to post because it has the #13 in it. Hmmm what could it be? :)

Should be very interesting!

CNN

ZAHN: So how would you feel if someone told you you couldn't adopt a baby because you're not thin enough, not rich enough, nor attractive enough? We're bringing this story out in the open tonight because that's exactly what's about to happen when Americans try to adopt children from China, and some people say that is downright discriminatory. China is the most popular country Americans go to for foreign adoptions. Last year, nearly 6,500 Chinese children found parents right here in the U.S. John Vause is in Beijing tonight and he joins me live. So, John, what are some of these restrictions that are about to be put in place that we need to be aware of?

JOHN VAUSE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Paula, the Chinese government says these new measures are all about finding better homes for Chinese orphans, so as of this coming May, all foreigners, not just Americans, but anyone from overseas wanting to adopt a Chinese orphan must meet some of these following criteria. They must not be morbidly obese, in other words, a body mass index of over 40, they must not have facial deformities, they must not take antidepressants. On the other side of the equation, they must have a net worth of $80,000 or more. They must earn over $30,000 a year. They must also be, this is one of the biggest changes, they also must be a man and a woman who have, in fact, been married for at least two years, aged between 30 and 50. So in other words, no singles. In the past, China was one of the few countries in the world who would allow singles to adopt kids. They've never allowed gay adoption but they have allowed singles in limited numbers to adopt kids but it seems that will be changing as well, Paula.

ZAHN: So what is the Chinese government officially saying about this, and why they want to institute these changes?

VAUSE: Well, the Chinese government is making no apologies for the new criteria. An official that we spoke to Friday told us in part, quote, "Our job is to help the homeless children find warm families, rather than just children for childless families." At the same time we're insisting there's been no change to the actual adoption policy. They're just introducing a preference system, because quite simply, there are so many foreigners who want to come here that they just outnumber the orphans who are available for adoption, and there are lengthy waiting periods for foreigners wanting Chinese kids. They can wait for a year, in many cases sometimes more, Paula.

ZAHN: John Vause, thanks so much for the update. Joining me now, an attorney Sondra Solovay, an author of "Tipping the Scales of Justice: Fighting Weight-Based Discrimination." She also has a new book coming out later this year. Welcome back. Some of these rules, I think, are a little bit easier for us to swallow than others. I think some people think it's probably pretty justified that prospective parents have enough money to care for a children, but what about weight restrictions, what about facial deformities, and how that could compromise someone's ability to adopt?

SONDRA SOLOVAY, AUTHOR, "TIPPING THE SCALES OF JUSTICE": These restrictions are definitely troubling. I certainly empathize with the difficult decision of figuring out which adoptive family is going to be the best for a child and the children we're most concerned about. But you simply can't tell by looking at someone if they're going to be a good adoptive parent. We don't have to rent "Mommy Dearest" to remember that a pretty face doesn't mean a pretty family. And certainly you can't tell the amount of love a parent has in their heart by looking at the number on their bathroom scale.

ZAHN: But on the flipside of all this, doesn't China have the right to create whatever rules it wants to, no matter how unpalatable some of them might seem?

SOLOVAY: Sure, they have the right, they have the obligation to do what they think is best to look out for their children. That's absolutely true. It's an interesting point as well, because some of these agencies that are in the U.S. are going to be in quite a predicament, caught between two different rules, rules in the United States prohibiting them from discriminating based on disability, based on weight, based on marital status and the restrictions that China imposed so it's difficult for the agencies, too, but I think we need to bring our attention back to the children and the idea is to find the children the best, most loving homes they can, and those homes don't come in a particular weight limit or a particular size. In fact, we have this idea, I suppose, of a traditional home. But when children come from China to the U.S., many will be placed in homes that are going to be mixed race or mixed ethnicity anyway. These aren't traditional homes and it's the diversity in the U.S. that makes those families understand that they have the same rights as any other family.

ZAHN: How many angry calls are you taking from prospective parents out there about these new regulations?

SOLOVAY: I expect my office is going to be absolutely flooded with calls not only from parents, but from the agencies themselves, wondering about their rights and responsibilities. For example, in San Francisco, you can't discriminate based on weight, so an agency in San Francisco is going to have a difficult time walking that line.

ZAHN: Well, Sondra Solovay, we're going to leave that there and get more reaction now. Thank you for your time. From our panel.

SOLOVAY: Thank you.

ZAHN: One more time. Cenk Uygur, Roland Martin, Solangel Maldonado. Obviously the Chinese government is making it clear it wants to be more selective will prospective parents, it wants to place these children in the best family environment it can. Isn't that justified?

MALDONADO: Absolutely. I think we all know that China is a sovereign country. It has the right to place whatever restrictions on foreigners who are seeking to adopt their children that it wants. And adoption is really about supply and demand, and the reality is that there are many more Americans, many more Westerners seeking to adopt children from China than there are children available so the Chinese government can decide to do whatever it wants.

MARTIN: OK, why? What's the big deal with Chinese children? Enlighten me, please, help me out.

ZAHN: You understand this better than anybody. Why don't we see more Americans adopting black foster children?

MARTIN: That's my point. What's the big deal with Chinese children? Why the infatuation?

ZAHN: You think it's something with the color of their skin? Is that what you're driving at?

MARTIN: Maybe they think they can adopt a smart kid that is going to grow up to be a doctor? I don't know. They need to realize that's called training, not just inherent, it will happen when they're born. Angel, help me out.

MALDONADO: Absolutely. This is something I've been looking into for a long time. Americans have this love affair with girls from China. There is this belief, this perception, irrational as it might be that if you adopt a little girl from China, she's going to be intelligent, she's going to be more lovable.

MARTIN: Like the porcelain doll.

MALDONADO: We definitely see that idea of the beautiful Chinese little girl, as compared to do, they really want to adopt a black boy.

ZAHN: What difference does it make if the prospective parent has a facial deformity and the prospective parent weighs 70 more pounds than the scale says they should weigh.

UYGUR: I love the idea of them weighing people. All right. So you know, first of all, okay, so gay parents are out. That's a clear rule, but then also Dennis Hastert's out because he's way too fat. They put him on the scale, sorry. But I'd probably be out. I don't know, maybe I'd have to go on an exercise regimen, to do the body mass indexes they pinch you in all of these different places.

ZAHN: You can fake it, suck it in.

UYGUR: Not me.

MARTIN: Paula, you raise the question -- China, first of all, they do have the right to do it, but the flipside is what is the infatuation by Americans and other foreigners when it comes to adopting Chinese children? That is a real issue there, and why do we avoid other children and not just -- children who are here in America, who are looking for homes, and who just like Chinese orphans want a nice place to live.

ZAHN: But realistically, how are you ever going to change that bias?

UYGUR: I think a lot of people are looking for Muslim children these days.

ZAHN: Yeah, right.

UYGUR: Because we started the Iraq war and there's so many orphans. I'm sure they're getting a lot of Iraqi children, right? No, of course, they think it's cute and they're smart and it's really dumb, actually, of course. Roland's right, it's all in the training and it's a shame because all over the world there's other kids that need to be adopted especially in Africa, but for once, the celebrities are doing the right thing there trying to foster that.

MARTIN: Call the queen of Africa, Angelina Jolie. She can hook you up.

MALDONADO: I think what we need to do is we need to break down some of the misconceptions. For example, people believe if they're adopting a child from China, the child is going to be healthier than a child they adopt in the United States and that is just not true. Even if the child is born...

ZAHN: It defies logic. The quality of the medical care many of these kids have suffered through the first several months of life.

MARTIN: What also ignores logic is that China is having an explosion when it comes to obesity as well so maybe they should start their own million pound challenge like we started in Chicago to deal with Chinese folks who don't want to have overweight kids.

ZAHN: What are some of the other assumptions you think people in America make about the native intelligence of children based on whether you're Hispanic -- We had a guest on the other night when you were with us suggesting that Hispanic parents don't take education as seriously as some other sets of our population. There's a very complicated picture here.

UYGUR: And America is changing and some of the assumptions are going to change because of that. What really happens isn't of course that Asians are smarter. Immigrant families foster a culture where they work hard and emphasize education so Jewish families went through that, Asian families went through that. But now Eastern European families are coming and doing the same thing and African families are coming and doing the same thing. So I can't wait for 10, 20 years down the line, everybody's like I've got to have an African child. Because they're all geniuses.

MARTIN: Remember, those are learned traits that you learn based upon how you have been raised.

UYGUR: Of course.

MARTIN: You are simply not born, hey that, kid will have a great work ethic because they were born to an immigrant family. It simply doesn't work that way because you got some lazy immigrant families. What do you think the assumptions Americans make about kids of Asian descent even here in America, they'll work hard, they'll own their store someday.

UYGUR: They'll be brilliant.

ZAHN: All right. Hispanic...

MALDONADO: Well the idea about Hispanic kids, it's sort of mixed. I think the stereotypes about Hispanic kids are both positive and negative. They believe that Hispanic kids are likely to work harder than black kids, but they also believe that they're not going to be as intelligent as Asian kids.

ZAHN: Muslim kids.

UYGUR: They're going to grow up to be violent. Who is adopting a Muslim kid? Has anyone adopted a Muslim kid in the last 20 years in America?

MARTIN: You've got somebody sitting there saying, keep the Muslim kid out of chemistry class. Keep them away.

ZAHN: How about black kids? Do you think the average American out there makes the assumption they'll be lazy and never make it through high school?

MARTIN: I think they probably assume they're going to sing for them like Jay Z and play like in the NBC.

ZAHN: Anybody would love to have Jay Z's career.

MARTIN: I'd rather have Bob Johnson's. He's a billionaire and Jay Z isn't.

ZAHN: Thank you, Roland Martin, Solangel Maldonado. Thank you, all. Appreciate your time.
***************************************************
OK, so what do you think? I thought the article makes a lot of good points that the panel just goes wild with at the end and ruins it. This was actually my lunch conversation on Thursday. Why don't I adopt a black local child instead of going to China? Has my local culture taught me that the child won't have potential and they'll be trouble makers? Why can't I, as a single white female, adopt a black child and not get a lot of grief for it? Why is the only agency willing to work with me on the adoption of a black baby is in Utah and not TN?

2 years ago before I started my China homestudy, I asked about a foster child that was a true orphan. She was 3 years old and there was just something in her expression that spoke to me. She was black. No one would give me information and I was told later by someone that works in the system that they discourage white people adopting black children. Um ok. I also had the same experience when I showed interest in a bi-racial child. Call me crazy, but can't I have a bi-racial child of my own? Why would it be such a stretch to adopt one?

So let's get back to why I choose China. I saw that awful program where they had the babies tied to potty chairs. The looks on their faces just killed you. Those children needed me, I knew what I was going to do. This was 13 years ago.

Is that need still there? Truthfully no. If China would open the floodgates and clear out each and every orphanage the need would be created. When you have a 18 month waiting list for a child, that child is in high demand. Whether you want to think about this way or not, that child will go to someone, whether it's you or not. I guess this is where the whole "this child is meant for you" idea comes into play. I think my daughter from China was meant for the woman that she was born to. For reasons not known to me, she wasn't able to keep her. I'm just a substitute. I think God created that life for her and man robbed her of it. I don't want to wipe out her sacrifice by saying "oh it's ok, this child is meant for me anyway". I cringe everytime I hear an adoptive family say that. But don't get me wrong, I am thrilled for the opportunity to have this child in my life. She will be loved!

So back to the need portion of the program. Does China need us to adopt the 12,000 children they release for international adoption? Not all of us. Remember how MAD I was that they weren't going to let me adopt a second child? I felt like they had MURDERED my second child.

Then I start looking at other programs. This is what I found:

We did nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands and lied about how much radiation still existed on their islands. Most residents have cancer later on in life. Children are available now.

Did you know that El Salvador has experience several horrible storms that has wiped out housing and killed people? They have orphans too.

There are residents of Poland that can't afford to FEED their children. They go into orphanages, many ran by the Catholic Church. Sometimes hunger is an issue we can't fathom in America. We have food stamp programs. We have WIC. We have food pantries. I'm not saying that there aren't people out there that have money issues and therefore food issues. It's just they have a lot more help available to them than someone in Poland.

Ok, so my point is, go where the need is. Go where you feel drawn. China has been in my heart for a long time. Just because their need of me has dimenished in the last 13 years doesn't mean I don't need them. This adoption experience is something that I need to do, selfishly for me!

Mirth on Monday

Well it's really Tuesday, don't tell!

Did you know a synonym of mirth is GLEE? It's one of my favorite words!

Glee goes along with giddy, another one of my favorite words!

Ok, so why am I giddy today? Because someone was nice enough to think of me and is giving me little teeny baby clothes for my daughter. I've got bigger sizes but nothing little because I didn't want to get my hopes up that she was going to be very young. The thought of little 6 month clothes makes me giddy. Fills me with glee! It makes me mirth-ful? (Ok I know that was a stretch).

I am mostly putting these here so I can play them ;)

Freebies

There are a LOT of freebies or near freebies going on right now.

http://www.colgate.com/app/ColgateTotal/US/EN/SpecialOffers/Coupon10.cvsp

Today is CVS day. Buy 2 Colgate toothpastes (B1G1) and three Palmolives dishwashing liquid. Send off the rebate. Freebies with CASH back, gotta love it!

Patene is also $1.97 at CVS today. Is your CVS out? Then you are one lucky girl because you my friend can get a rain check. I'd get one for enough bottles to last a year (or two haha) then go over to Ebay and buy Pantene $1.50 off of 1 coupon bundles.

It comes out to this for TN:
1.97 X 20 X 1.095 tax = 43.14 - $30 (20, $1.50 off each bottle) = $13.14 for 20 bottles of Pantene shampoo and conditioner. Be sure to look for the older style of bottles, you get 20% more for free.

Tada!

The new Walgreen rebates are out too. This month is a bottle of Finesse (there is a $2.00 coupon floating around out there), Chloroseptic sore throat strips ($1 off coupon), an Oral B Toothbrush (nice, the kind they give away every other month) and something called Joint Juice ($2 coupon) which to me sounds really gross :)

Anyway, if your goal is to save money and get great deals this year just stick with me. I spend 10 minutes a day hoping through my "deal" sites and I'll post the good stuff here.

Happy New Year!

It seems like I've been waiting on 2007 FOREVER!

This is the year that...

- My daughter will be home
- My home renovations will be complete
- I'll have my finances squeaky clean

Bring on 2007!

Happy New Year!

Packing for the trip...

What is a girl to do when her referral is taking 18 months instead of 6? Why tweak her packing list over ...and over... and over... well, you get the idea.

This my friends is my final list. I've already packed half of it away into little Ziploc baggies, sorted by "category". You will not see my shampoo packets anywhere near my toothpaste, thank you very much.

If you have something to add to the list, please post it. At one point, I had the grand idea to go carry on only. I would totally do that if I had a second person going to split up the baby loot up with. Then they messed me up with the liquid thing... tell me how I am suppose to survive on 2 ounces of contact cleaner for 3 weeks?

So now instead of carry on only, I'm joining the "Oh PLEASE let this be under 40 pounds" club. My goal is to have one hand free and be able to lift my bags with the other. I'm assuming the worst, several flights of stairs everywhere.

I normally don't get torn up over all the adoption videos out there. This one gets me twice, first when you see all the cribs lined up (any multi crib room scene kills me) and around 3:20 when they show her room. Heck I have a room just like that just collecting dust!

My 2007 Resolutions

I hope everyone had a very good Christmas. I got (and gave) all kinds of good loot. My movie buckets with Superman Returns and Pirates 2 went over well. I packaged them in little tubs and added candy and popcorn to them. Everyone "petted" their super duper fru fru fluffy blankets and seemed to like them. My mom really like her ladder and I think she'll be getting tools from me from now on (I can never find a screwdriver in her house and her hammer is sized for a 3 year old). I hope my angel tree girl enjoyed her stuff. I know there was too much clothing and not enough toys, but maybe buying some of the larger clothing items will free up some funds so her mom can get a toy that she know she'll love.

Anyway the 26th is the day I write down my goals. Last year it was organizing and sticking to my savings plans. I did organize a LOT so I think I met that goal. Savings wise, I was about 1K off, but that was because of beach trip #2 and beach trip #3 added to the Disney trip (I like the beach and it's taking all my willpower not to book a room for this weekend when it will be 73 & 70!). In the grand scheme of things, not too bad :)

So here it is for this year...

1. To behave myself $ wise until the end of March. I have a very good chance of meeting my savings goals if I can just be good (read- no eBay, no TJ Maxx - twitch twitch). Does the weekend beach trip count if I am driving back on the 1st? hehe

2. To cool it with buying things for Natalie. Heck I might even purge some stuff from her collection, she has too many toys. And I am going to get over redoing her room for the 3rd time. Pink is grand, the hearts are cute and I'm not changing it back to her original theme even tho red is cool and the quilt for that set is beautiful .

3. Use stuff up. Bath products, makeup, even stuff out of the freezer and pantry. Oh and gift cards, I have a bunch. I don't need bigger closets, I just need less stuff :)

I'm sure there is a lot more but these three are obtainable I think. Wish me luck!

Happy December 26th!

Ask me why I have a El Salvador ticker and weather girl on my blog?

Because DD#2 is there!

The program is 18-24 months total. The process isn't that much different that China, from what I've read. I'll use a lot of the same documents that I used for China (home study, financial, employment verification, medical) and they are authenticated probably just as much (TN requires a notary, a county verification, a state verification, a state department verification and a consulate verification). I'll travel to pick her up 4-8 weeks after referral and stay 2-3 weeks in country.

I'll be using America World Adoption and I'll start on paperwork on Oct 1, 2007. Hopefully Natalie and I will be back from China during the summer so I'll be back to work by Oct 1 to get a good feel on how it is to be a single working mom.

Track Santa

If you have kids, they'll get a kick out of tracking Santa.

How to survive an alien attack

hehe

hehe

You'll have to forgive me, a few days ago I was bit by a spider. It took less than a minute for my finger to blow up and I thought I might have to go to the emergency room (I weird allergy issues). To be preventative, I grabbed my "oh crap I ate something I shouldn't of" handy dandy bottle of children's liquid benedryll. You take a swig and it buys you time.

So anyway, I drink some, no change and I start to feel weird. So I drink some more. My dad was like let's just go to the doc and stubborn me was like no, they'll charge me $75 to tell me to go home and take benedryll. So I drink a little more.

The last thing I remember is being on my sofa with my dad trying to feed me dinner at 7pm. I woke up at 2:30 PM the next day....oops

So now, I'm just all messed up. It's 2am and I prob won't go to bed tonight. My mind is like "whoa, too much sleep, too much energy, you are killing me!" ....And am I using my boundless energy for anything productive? Heck no, I'm watching movie clips online, I'm just that cool (not).

Lumber :)

I know it's silly to be excited about lumber but I am!

Today we bought the lumber to repair my deck. Awhile back, a wind storm tore off the roof and took one entire wall out. It crashed 10 feet below into my driveway. The insurance company sent me a check that would cover a replacement roof & wall but I stuck that $ on the house because that was the exact amount I needed to pay it off (well that plus $3).

Soooo, fast forward to now, I have a 16 X 16 ft deck on the side of my house that is getting new railings that look like the front porch. Lucky for me, the floor was not damaged at all from the storm, that would of cost a LOT more. I choose not to put another roof on the deck because I really like the view from my kitchen sink window, a roof totally blocks that.

So when we are all done, I'll grab a couple of these:

and I'll be all set for summer :)

Kim = nerd

I find the dumbest stuff online, I love it. This was on BR's Q&A page

http://www.howitshouldhaveended.com/Divx%20links/Superman.html

and lookie lookie, there is a new Transformer's trailer. Something tells me I'll be the only girl in the theatre on opening night?

Windows Media

Cool thing about the movie, part of it was filmed on Holloman AFB in NM where my ex was stationed for the first 6 months we were together. It's where the stealths are kept and they always thought it was funny to buzz cars on the highway.

Support Northwest Airlines

They provide deep discounts on adoption tickets that they allow you to change at the last minute. I think that alone should have all adoptive parents that read this be willing to take a minute and sign their electronic petition.

http://www.nwa.com/features/shanghai/

They are trying to get approval to have non stop service from Detroit to Shanghai. More routes to China can only benefit us.

Check it out! - Kim

Tada!

First time with lights. I bought the garland in 1999 to put on the house in TX. My ex wasn't really into decorating so it sat in a box until yesterday :)

And I changed over my wreath. It was fun decorating for the first time in 6 years!

2 more days...

until my front porch is done :) I have my garland and lights ready to go. 2006..the first year I put out Christmas lights :)

This is day one. Yes that is SNOW. We froze!

And this was the end of today. It was 68 degrees today, more like April than Dec. For those who don't believe in global warming, you needed to be in east TN today!

(look, there is Maggie on the right, mom to the last batch of kittens. To the left is baby #5 I could never catch, he's fast so I've named him Rocket)

Only 14 more rails on the front to go, then we have to make 2- 18 inch wide sections just for decoration where I was standing. None of it's hard, just time consuming. We've learned the right way to do a lot of this too, so it will be much faster when we start on the deck after Christmas :)

YAY ANN!

My friend Ann was on Jeopardy tonight! They filmed it about a month ago. She was so nervous but I think she did a really good job. Second place with 20K isn't too shabby :)

I swear I am trying to get it out of my system...

I am just really ticked about the new rules for China. I understand that I should be happy I have a LID and that I will be there next summer. But here's the kicker... I qualify under the new rules EXCEPT for being single.

Listen to this little tidbit from the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee ---

78 percent of families in 2002 are comprised of dual-income earners.

Did everyone catch that? And that's just 2002, who knows what it is now. Even if you are a dual parent household, that doesn't mean your kids won't be in daycare with mine.

That is what frustrates me and just ticks me off. I am not against marriage (if it works for you, I AM happy for you!), it's just not my thing. I am happy with my life and self sufficient, I just don't care for an entire country telling me I'm not worthy because I choose not to get married.

I know one stay at home mom. Just one out of the hundreds of women I know from...um...work.

Pre Adoption Trip

I sort of have in my head what my pre-adoption trip will be like. Any suggestions on tweaking it would be much appreciated.

Day 1- Fly to Beijing via Detroit. Arrive late that night, check into Holiday Inn Central Plaza.

Day 2 - Have hotel car service take me to the train station. Take the #2 bus to the Badaling section of the Great Wall. Have hotel arrange tickets to the acrobat show that evening.

Day 3 - Take taxi to Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City & Temple of Heaven. They are all together and under 5 miles from the hotel. Taxis are very cheap in China! Have hotel arrange tickets to the opera at Liyuan Theater inside Qianmen Hotel (FYI, tickets are 20-80 RM which is 3-10$s)

Day 4 - Check out of hotel but leave large roller bag in their holding area (just use carry on tote for a few days so I can be more mobile). Take taxi to Beijing Zoo, Panda Garden, and Beijing Aquarium which is less than 5 miles away. Take taxi to Beijing Bus/Train station for 20:28 soft sleeper trip to Xian.

Day 5 - Arrive in Xian at 8am. Take #306 bus from the station to the terracotta warriors. English speaking guides are available for $6. Take bus back to station then a taxi to the Sofitel Hotel and check in. Wander around local area and find someplace good for dinner.

Day 6 - Check out of hotel. Wander around Xian, try to make it to a section of the city wall. Make it back to the train station for 18:44 soft sleeper trip to Shanghai.

Day 7 - Arrive in Shanghai at 11:00 AM. Take taxi to Crowne Plaza Hotel and check in. Take taxi to Yu Gardens and walk around. Take taxi to Bund and make my way to Shanghai's New Heights bar to watch the sun set from their rooftop area.

Day 8 - Check out of hotel. Wander around locally, I will be in a college area, there will be lots of interesting things to see. Make my way to the train station again to make the 19:00 soft sleeper trip back to Beijing.

Day 9 - Arrive Beijing 7:00. Check back into Holiday Inn Central Plaza & pick up bag I left there earlier. Take taxi to pearl market and shop.

Day 10 - Use this Beijing day to finish up all the things I didn't get done in the first 4 days here. (Added- thanks for the comment!)

Day 11 - Meet up with my travel group in the AM so we can go our province together.

I've researched the hotels until I can tell you about them in my sleep. I choose each one based on Trip Advisor comments and their proximity to landmarks and the train stations. The only part of the trip that I feel weird about is being at the Bund at night alone. I will probably arrange a tour with a company that day. The reason I think I won't be going with a tour group the whole time is one, the cost. This trip is $2500 for a single traveler. I have it down as 1K on my own. And two, I don't do well with people telling me what to do and where to be...that is very bad in a tour group. Three - I also get impatient with other travelers who didn't do their home work and constantly ask me questions about where we are going. I always get those questions because I do a lot of homework before any of my trips and know where we are going!

If you could add 1 more day to this trip, what would you add? Any ideas?

I think I'm going to be ill.

A new policy is going into effect May 1st, that is the last day that singles can log in a dossier.

My 12-05-05 dossier is just fine, I'll be traveling to China probably in the summer.

But it totally kills off my second child.

Here is a crazy thought, put some money into the orphanages so they can get their kids ready for international adoption. Clear them out, let them collect the fees so they can take care of the un-adoptable children. Why would you want an institution full of children without families?

I am adding a week to my adoption trip. I'll be staying in Beijing, Xian and Shanghai. I think I just want to try to understand the people that she'll be coming from. Now that she won't have a Chinese sister, I'll need to focus more on how I can help her thrive in a white area. I think learning of the history and spending time with the people will help with that.

Very exciting :)

I am getting a new front porch..sort of :) Just as a background, my house was part of an estate sale and it was in pretty bad shape. We first tackled the inside projects, tons of paint, refinishing the hardwood, redid the whole bath, put in kitchen tile and painted the cabinets. There has also been a lot of plumbing redos and wiring upgrades. On the outside we did siding, new gutters and windows. It's been quite the project!

Now we find ourselves knee deep in the eyesore dilemma. Every time you fix something and make it pretty and new, it makes something else look just that much worse.

My biggest eyesore now is my front porch. My current front porch is a wide rectangle, about 14 feet X 8 feet. Imagine a box, my front door is in the upper left corner, my big living room window is in the middle of the top portion next to the door. All it has it two square columns holding up the edges in the bottom left and right corners.

I am getting new supports (which will probably still be square) and rails :) Originally I had awful metal ones that were rusty and sharp, I took those out the first week I lived here. So the front porch area has looked naked for awhile.

Once that's done I'll paint my white wicker furniture a cute color and put it on the front porch. I'd also like to have long curtain type things that I could gather and tie to the supports. When I mentioned that to dad he just gave me "that look", the "I'm just going to nod my head yes while you girl up my cool wood working project" look - hehe

Want to see something frightening? I know what is going through your head, holy crap, and she is going to put a kid in there?

Then look, just a year later...

I can't find my phase three picture with the white windows. Phase 4 is with the redone front porch, 5 will be the deck, 6 will be the driveway and hopefully the last project in this fixer upper :)

Practicing

Everyone says the baby is going to make a mess and get into things that I'd never think of. I think my rotten kittens have prepared me quite a bit!

It's my fault for leaving this case in the living room for more than 5 minutes...

And it's totally my fault too, I cleaned out the office yesterday and forgot the bag of trash out in the hall. This is what I woke up to...

They were very sad when I started cleaning it up.

I love my online groups....

they are just a wealth of information. Read this article, this is me:

Nearly half of women fear life as a bag lady

By Jennifer Harper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
August 23, 2006

They may have money in their purses and a decent salary, but many women fear they'll lose their income and end up a bag lady, forgotten and destitute.
A "startling" 90 percent of women say they feel financially insecure, according to a survey of almost 1,925 women released yesterday by Allianz, a Minnesota-based life insurance company.
Almost half are troubled by a "tremendous fear of becoming a bag lady" -- 46 percent of women overall, and 48 percent of those with an annual income of more than $100,000. An additional 57 percent are sorry they had not learned more about money matters in school.
Such concerns foster an array of behaviors and thoughts.
Women, for example, are twice as likely as men -- 18 percent to 9 percent -- to set aside a secret stash of money, the study found. Roughly the same number counseled their daughters to do the same. And the feminine thrill of shopping took a back seat to practicality: Two-thirds said the best thing about having money is the feeling of security it brought them, rather than buying power or status.
"They want to know they can handle what might lie in front of them," said Ken Dychtwald, a gerontologist who consulted on the project.
Women have made substantial financial progress, the study said, noting their median income has increased 60 percent in the past three decades. They are expected to control 60 percent of U.S. wealth by 2010. Half of all stock market investors also are women.
And yes, men and women have different attitudes about money, which often spawns disagreements between the sexes. Women, for example, think financial arguments revolve around "power and control" while men say it's a matter of trust.
Are American men unnerved by financially independent women? Not likely. According to a related Allianz poll, more than 90 percent found such a quality to be "sexy."
Both polls were conducted May 4 to July 5, and have a margin of error of two percentage points.
Meanwhile, "the adage of 'marrying well' no longer works," the study states.
Indeed, only 8 percent of female respondents said they hoped a man would solve their financial woes. More than one-third considered themselves financially competent, almost a quarter said they had a financial partnership with their spouse and 18 percent said they felt financially "empowered." But 18 percent said they were confused and worried by money.
"Money fears of women are complicated. They fear failure, or making mistakes. They fear they are expendable. Their fear of being poor, however, has topped the list for two decades," said Judith Briles, a Denver financial adviser and author of 23 books on money management.
It seems an ingrained girl thing, though.
"Bag lady syndrome is a fear many women share that their financial security could disappear in a heartbeat, leaving them homeless, penniless and destitute," MSN money columnist Jay McDonald wrote in January. "Lily Tomlin, Gloria Steinem, Shirley MacLaine and Katie Couric all admit to having a bag lady in their anxiety closet."

I am naming that little nagger in the back of my mind the baglady. If I'm lucky I'll figure out a way to shut her up.

Disapointment, New music and a Lesson

My agency has no word of referrals unlike everyone else. My friend Pam might not be getting her referral this week :( The announcement says up to the 8th and in the past, that has included that date. Maybe not this month, Living Hope doesn't have anything coming from Beijing via DHL on their account. We had 2 families that were skipped last month due to questioning that were suppose to get their referrals also. It seems there is a new policy, if they ask questions, you get pulled from your group and you land wherever they are at in the review process. If it takes you a month to get information back to them and for them to process you, it seems like they'll scoot your LID to that later time. A month used to be just a month. Now it is taking 2-3 real days to process 1 paperwork day. I have 87 paperwork days until my referral. That could be 87- 261 real days for me. Worse case, that puts me with an August referral travelling in Oct. If that is how it's going to be, I'm ok with that. __________________________________________________

I really like movie soundtracks :) My favorite is Braveheart (James Horner) and I get REALLY ticked when I hear inferior movies using bits of the soundtrack (like Castaway, that was a stupid movie). I think movies earn their music!

My second favorite is Star Wars. Big shock there! It's written in the handbook for nerds, that one must own all the movies in the most expensive collectors edition format and have at least one of the soundtracks in their car :) John Williams - you rock!

Third is...wait for it.....Superman. Yup, no brainer I know. John Ottman did a good job, he tweaked the main theme that John Williams created in the 70's. I think he would of been hunted down by fans and poked with sharp sticks if he hadn't ;)

Anyway, I changed the music because it didn't sound superman-ish. It was the music from the teenage Clark jumping over cornfields, I liked that part of the movie :) Now it's from a flying scene.

Ok, here is our fun YouTube goody of the day. There is a girl willing to teach the world Chinese! That is no easy feat considering I am southern. Not too southern, I spent 10 years in other places that smoothed out my drawl a bit but it's still there.
Today we will learn how to say hello. "Ni hao" or "knee how" if you are from TN ;)

Have a good day for the 4 people that read my blog! I am off to my mom's to prepare for the garage sale. Wish me luck, I hope to finish wiping out my Avon inventory! :)
